Join us for a literary afternoon!

We will start with a walking tour of the Upper East Side and discuss how the area evolved from the humble beginnings of slaughterhouses and stables to the wealthiest district per capita in the city with some of America's greatest writers as its residents.

Stops will include where J. D. Salinger lived following his completion of Catcher in the Rye; the location where E. L. Doctorow wrote Ragtime; the home of All Quiet of the Western Front author Erich Maria Remarque; the home of Tennessee Williams; and the residence of author Arthur Miller. Then we will visit the city's oldest library, The New York Society Library, founded in 1754.

Originally located in the old City Hall, the library served many of the Founding Fathers when New York was the nation's capital. Over the years the library has had many famous members including George Washington, Henry David Thoreau, John James Audubon, Herman Melville, Willa Cather and British-American authors W.H. Auden and P.G. Wodehouse.

We will tour the 1917 Italianate town house which, besides its collection of 300,000 books, includes artworks from all periods of history including pieces by English painter Joseph Wright of Derby, sculptor Hiram Powers and Will Barnet.

Special Collections Librarian Barbara Bieck and Conservator Christina Amato will show us some of the Library's treasures as we go behind the scenes into member-only areas, including the rare books room and the conservation studio.

Please Note: This tour requires walking, standing, and possible stair climbing
