Emerald Gem: Prospect Park and the Montauk Club

Opened in 1867 and designed by Central Park architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Englishman Calvert Vaux, Prospect Park was created to improve on all the "mistakes" of its Manhattan counterpart.

Royal Oak members will take a two-hour tour that compares the park to Central park, and explains how Prospect Park became Brooklyn's emerald gem and one of the finest examples of Victorian landscape design. Stops will include Long Meadow, Vale of Cashmere, Battle Pass, Nellie's Lawn, and the Ravine.

After the walking tour, at 1:00 pm we will head to the Montauk Club for a three course sit-down lunch.

The private Park Slope social club was founded in 1889. The magnificent club house was designed by famed New York architect Francis H. Kimball in the Venetian gothic style popularized by the English architectural critic, John Ruskin.

Of the hundreds of clubs in Brooklyn at the time, the Montauk Club is the only one that remains and has hosted several presidents including William McKinley and John F. Kennedy.

Please Note: This tour requires walking, standing, and possible stair climbing
