Join Royal Oak for a special evening at The New York Public Library!

First, we will visit the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle, originally part of the library of the financier Carl H. Pforzheimer, Sr. (1879-1957). The still growing collection includes books and manuscripts of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, as well as contemporaries like Lord Byron.

The collection also contains British political and scientific treatises, dictionaries, almanacs, and ephemera such as pamphlets from the 1820 adultery trial of Queen Caroline—an event that prompted responses in verse by both Shelley and Byron.

Curator Dr. Elizabeth Denlinger will show us highlights, as well as lesser known manuscripts, including a number by women writers of the period.

We will then head to the Berg Collection, established in 1940 by the brothers Henry W. (1858-1938) and Albert A. Berg (1872-1950), where we will get an insider's peek at some of the British volumes, such as William Caxton's 1480 edition of the Chronicles of England, the 1516 first edition of Thomas More's Utopia, the first four Shakespeare folios and Shakespeare's 1640 Poems.

We will also see manuscript holdings from the period between 1820-1970 including works by Alfred Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling and Vita Sackville-West.

LOCATION: New York Public Library, 476 Fifth Avenue

CHARGE: $65 Art & Design members and above
