Executive Director - The Royal Oak Foundation    New York, NY

Job Position: Executive Director (full-time)

Salary and benefits: Commensurate with experience. Benefits package is competitive with similar not-for-profit organizations, including health and dental insurance plans, a voluntary 403(b) savings plan with employer match, and MTA Transitcheks.

The Royal Oak Foundationis an American not-for-profit organization established in 1973. Royal Oak is the United States membership affiliate of the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Foundation and its members support the Trust’s mission of conservation and historic preservation through grants, cultural exchange, scholarships and fellowships. In the United States, Royal Oak offers educational and cultural programs, including lectures, tours and special events that address topics of art, architecture, collections, garden and landscape design, social history and preservation. The Royal Oak Foundation has a staff of eight and an annual operating budget of approximately $1.6 million.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Board of Directors through the Board Chairman, the Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of the Foundation’s operation and management. Key responsibilities include fundraising and membership development, budgeting and financial management, marketing and communications, public programs and special events, such as the Foundation’s annual gala.

The Executive Director functions as the organization's chief executive and has overall responsibility for strategic planning and leadership, policy development, program direction, membership development, fundraising, general staff management, and the financial integrity of the organization. To further the work of the Foundation, the Executive Director:

  • Maintains a productive and close working relationship with representatives of the National Trust overseas
  • Works closely with various committees of the Board of Directors to execute the Foundation’s mission
  • Identifies and cultivates new sources of funding and corporate partnerships as well as deepening relationships with existing constituents

The ideal candidate will also have an interest in the work of The Royal Oak Foundation and the National Trust, and will be committed to developing new skills and working with others to creatively advance the organization’s overall mission. Previous experience with US/UK organizations, cultural institutions, and historic preservation is a plus. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Royal Oak has a small office environment where staff pitches in, works together, and takes on new and different responsibilities. Some US and UK travel will be required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum ten years management experience; not-for-profit preferred
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Strong writing and communications skills
  • Team player with a positive attitude and a sense of humor
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, experience with Raiser’s Edge database a plus
