Sacred PlacesCrispin Paine

SACRED PLACES - Many National Trust properties have a deeper significance than their obvious historic ones. A large number of Trust sites have sacred roots, and the founders of the Trust were well aware of the direct ties that often exist between landscape and spirituality. The list of such places shows them to be extraordinarily diverse. The Japanese Garden at Tatton Park in Cheshire, the Nymphaeum at the Chedworth Roman Villa, and Giant's Causeway have been the source of as much inspiration through the ages as the altars at Staunton Harold, St. Mary's Studley Royal, or the chapel at Tyntesfield. At some places, mystery alone stirs the imagination: the Uffington White Horse and Cerne Giant, for example. The scenic Lake District inspired many artists, writers and musicians. Sacred Places details these National Trust properties and many others, with beautiful photography and fascinating descriptions.

The Great SilenceLiving in the Shadow of the Great War
Juliet Nicolson
$32 | add to cart
This is the story of the pause between 1918 and 1920. A two-minute silence to celebrate those who died was underpinned by a more enduring silence born out of national grief. Those who had danced through settled, Edwardian times, now faced a changed world. Some struggled to come to terms with the last four years, while others were anxious to move towards a new future. Change came to women, who were given the vote only five years after Emily Davidson had thrown herself on the ground at Ascot race course, to the poor, determined to tolerate their condition no longer, and to those permanently scarred, mentally and physically, by the conflict. The British Monarchy feared for its survival as monarchies around Europe collapsed. Whether it was embraced or rejected, change had arrived as the impact of a tragic war was gradually absorbed. Relying on written histories, both personal and academic, and with her trademark focus on daily life, Juliet Nicolson evokes what England was like during this fascinating hinge in history.

Household Gods The British and Their PossessionsDeborah Cohen
$25 | add to cart
At what point did the British develop their passion for interiors, wallpaper, furniture and decoration? This book offers surprising answers to this question, uncovering the roots of today’s consumer society and investigating the forces that shape consumer desires. Richly illustrated, it chronicles a hundred years of British interiors, focusing on class, choice, shopping and possessions. Exploring a wealth of unusual records and archives, Ms. Cohen locates the source of modern materialism in early 19th-century religious fervor. Over the course of the Victorian era, consumerism shed the taint of sin to become the preeminent means of expressing individuality. It uncovers a society of consumers whose identities have become entwined with the things they put in their houses.

Ms. Willes stops us in our tracks and points us backward, to a time when literacy was an uncommon trait and books were rare treasures. She goes on to illustrate the relationship between those who could own books (and read them), and what kinds of books they chose to acquire; as well as where and how they procured them. She then turns her insightful eye to the present, and the impact that modern developments such as television, the paperback, and book megamerchants have had upon reading.

In this handsome and engaging book, architectural historian Vaughan Hart (Professor of Architecture, University of Bath) draws together Vanbrugh's diverse interests and experiences to examine his surviving, destroyed, and unrealized buildings. Adhering to principles of architectural decorum and heraldry, Vanbrugh attempted to celebrate the character and achievements of his patrons through these forms and their ornament.

Britain's Lost CitiesGavin Stamp
$42 | add to cart
BRITAIN'S LOST CITIES - The destruction meted our on Britain's city centers during the 20th century by the combined efforts of the Lufrwaffe and brutal city planners is legendary. Medieval churches, Tudor alleyways, Georgian terraces, and Victorian theaters vanished forever, replaced by a landscape of concrete office blocks and characterless shopping malls. Now for the first time, architectural historian Gavin Stamp shows exactly what has been lost. Reproduced in this haunting volume are hundreds of photographs of cities showing streets and buildings that are gone forever. The text traces their creation and destruction, remembering the massive campaign to save the Euston Arch (wantonly demolished in 1962) and mourning the loss of lovely medieval Coventry (already doomed by the city planners even before German air raids intervened). This is an extraordinary evocation of Britain's architectural past, and a much-needed reminder of the importance of preserving heritage.
