SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Patter\, Pirates\, and Paradox: The World of Gilbert & Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Royal Doulton Figurine The Pirate King Gilbert and Sullivan Mikado \nLong before Rodgers & Hammerstein\, Ahrens & Flaherty\, or Webber & Rice\, W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan forged a groundbreaking partnership that helped shape the foundation of modern musical theatre. Together\, they created 14 Savoy operas—among them H.M.S. Pinafore\, The Pirates of Penzance\, The Mikado\, and The Gondoliers—that captivated audiences in Britain and America. With razor-sharp wit\, topsy-turvy humor\, and memorably lyrical scores\, their works lampooned Victorian society\, politics\, class\, and convention\, establishing comic opera as a cornerstone of British popular culture. Mr. Kenrick will examine the genius of the Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration. He will explore how\ntheir innovation\, theatrical craft\, and uniquely British sensibility anticipated the integrated musical long before the term existed. More than a century later\, their operas continue to delight worldwide audiences as legacy continues to resonate across the stages of the West End and Broadway. \n\n\nJohn Kenrick is a theatre historian\, author\, and educator specializing in the history of musical theatre and film. He is the author of the textbook Musical Theatre: A History and has taught courses including History of Musical Theatre; Great Broadway Songwriters; and Rodgers & Hammerstein at New York University’s Steinhardt School\, The New School\, Marymount Manhattan College\, and the University of the Arts\, Philadelphia. A frequent speaker and media commentator\, Mr. Kenrick has lectured at many universities and cultural institutions. \n\nThe rental period has closed for this program.

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Sir John Vanbrugh and the English Country House
DESCRIPTION:Fireplace and statues inside the central block at Seaton Delaval Hall\, Northumberland. ©National Trust Images/Dennis Gilbert \nThe country houses designed by Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) are some of the most original and memorable works of architecture in the story of British architecture. Called ‘The Shakespeare of Architects’ by Sir John Soane\, Vanbrugh designed evocative and unforgettable palaces including Castle Howard and Blenheim Palace\, and his other country houses such as the NT’s Seaton Delaval are also unforgettable. Vanbrugh’s personal life was perhaps even more remarkable than his flamboyant architectural creations. He began his career as a wine merchant and then traveled to India in the service of the East India Company. He served as a marine officer and was later arrested and imprisoned in France on suspicion of being a spy. He was also a celebrity playwright before turning his mind to architecture. In honor of the 300th anniversary of Vanburgh’s death in 1726\, architectural historian Jeremy Musson will lecture about Vanbrugh’s life and illustrate and describe the architect’s iconic houses. He will reflect on Vanbrugh’s influence on architects through the 18-and-19th century\, and up until the present day. \n\nJeremy Musson is a leading authority on the English country house. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and sits on a number of boards including the Country House Foundation. He was awarded an MPhil in Renaissance History at the Warburg Institute\, University of London\, in 1989 and was Architectural Editor of Country Life from 1995-2007. He has written and edited hundreds of articles on historic country houses and has presented 14 programmes on BBC 2. He lectures and supervises academic programs for Cambridge University\, London University and Buckingham University\, and the Attingham Summer School. Among his books include Robert Adam: Country House Design\, Decoration & the Art of Elegance (2017)\, The Country House: Past\, Present\, Future: Great Houses of the British Isles (2018)\, and Romantics and Classics: Style in the English Country House (Rizzoli\, 2021). \n\nThe rental period has closed for this program.

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Entertaining with a Side of Chaos

She will also share family photos and stories\, and speak about creating a warm welcome—even if the tablecloth is not ironed. \n\nIndia Hicks is a designer\, author\, entrepreneur\, and humanitarian. Based in the Bahamas\, she continues to consult with fashion\, home\, and lifestyle brands while writing on design\, entertaining\, and family history. SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Splendor & Sociability: Robert Adam’s Country Houses
DESCRIPTION:Robert Adam was one of the greatest architects and interior designers of Georgian Britain. He introduced and popularized design based on his study of the ruins of ancient Rome\, using ancient classical ornaments\, including low relief plasterwork on ceilings and walls; carved and gilded classical motifs on furniture; and chimney pieces which incorporated classical masks\, wreaths\, and tributes. He also knew how to entice wealthy patrons into creating ambitious projects which evoked the buildings of the ancient world\, and yet worked for the most fashionable of parties\, and for family life. He created memorable interiors by his use of distinctive colors such as pink\, green\, lilac\, and straw\, within his carefully-planned dining rooms and drawing rooms\, libraries and saloons\, as well as breath-taking statue galleries. Adam’s work in British country houses resulted in some of the most memorable social spaces in history\, which also expressed the finest craftsmanship and highlighted the homeowner’s social status and fashionable taste. Architectural historian\, broadcaster\, and author Jeremy Musson will illustrate and discuss country house interiors designed or remodeled by Robert Adam such as Kedleston Hall\, Osterley Park\, Newby Hall\, Syon House\, and Saltram. \nJeremy Musson\, LLB Hons\, M.Phil\, FSA\, is an architectural historian and heritage consultant. He worked for the Victorian Society and the National Trust before joining Country Life\, in 1995\, where he was Architectural Editor in 1998-2007. He continues to contribute articles to Country Life; he is the author of several books and co-wrote and presented BBC 2’s The Curious House Guest series. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, and an affiliate lecturer at Cambridge University’s department of architecture\, he is also chairman of the Historic Houses Foundation. As a heritage consultant since 2007\, he has worked on major historic sites including St Paul’s Cathedral\, Ickworth Park\, Suffolk and Hardwick Hall\, Derbyshire. \nThe recording will be sent on October 9 by 12:00 p.m. ET and available through December 31\, 2026. \nTickets: $20 Members; $30 Non-members \n \nOr call 212-480-2889 x200

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Legal London: From Inn to Bar
DESCRIPTION:In 1234\, when King Henry III issued a decree forbidding the teaching of law within the City of London\, teachers and practitioners of the law were forced to relocate outside the City’s boundaries. They established practices in Holborn where they remained conveniently close to both their commercial clients as well as the Royal Courts at Westminster. Over the centuries\, barristers clustered together to form a series of institutions that evolved into the four prestigious Inns of Court — Gray’s Inn\, Lincoln’s Inn\, Inner Temple\, and Middle Temple. These legal societies possess the exclusive right to call individuals to the Bar to practice as barristers in England and Wales. On this virtual tour\, David Charnick will discuss the rich history and enduring traditions of London’s legal quarter and illustrate some of London’s most remarkable architectural treasures. He will explore the inner workings of Legal London through the buildings\, institutions\, and hidden corners that cluster around Chancery Lane. \nThe recording will be sent on October 14 by 12:00 p.m. ET and available through December 31\, 2026.  \nTickets: $30 Members; $40 Non-members \n \nOr call 212-480-2889 x200
