From grand estates to hidden collections\, history comes to life at every turn. SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | The Country Houses of James Wyatt (1746 –1813)
DESCRIPTION:Plas Newydd House and Garden\, Anglesey ©National Trust Images/Annapurna Mellor \nTalented\, urbane\, and highly influential\, James Wyatt\, RA\, was one of the great designers of his age. Architect to King George III\, his designs shaped some of Britain’s most remarkable country houses and royal residences. Wyatt trained in Italy (1762–68) and was a master of Neoclassicism\, making him a formidable rival to Robert Adam in the 1770s. He designed works for the royal family at Kew and Frogmore\, further cementing his reputation as favored architect of the monarchy. His Neoclassical country houses—such as Heaton Hall in Manchester\, Dodington Park in Gloucestershire\, and Castle Coole County Fermanagh—are among the finest of their kind. He also transformed existing estates\, reimagining Plas Newydd in Anglesey and Goodwood House in Sussex\, while designing exquisite interiors for properties such as Burton Constable Hall in Yorkshire. Beyond his classical style\, Wyatt was a pioneer of the Gothic Revival\, designing romantic\, medieval-inspired masterpieces such as Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire and Ashridge in Hertfordshire. He also worked on several cathedrals and redesigned the Bishop of Durham’s grand residence\, Auckland Castle. Wyatt’s contributions also include work on Christ Church\, Magdalen\, Oriel\, and Worcester Colleges\, Oxford. In this lecture\, historian and British country house expert Jeremy Musson explores the life and principal works of James Wyatt\, shedding light on one of the most versatile and accomplished architects of the Georgian age. \nJeremy Musson\, LLB Hons\, M.Phil\, FSA\, is an architectural historian and heritage consultant. Born in London\, he was educated at UCL and the Warburg Institute\, and worked for the Victorian Society and the National Trust\, before joining Country Life\, in 1995\, where he was Architectural Editor in 1998-2007. He continues to contribute to Country Life; and he is the author of several books\, and co-wrote and presented BBC 2’s The Curious House Guest series. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, and an affiliate lecturer of Cambridge University’s department of architecture\, he is also Chairman of the Historic Houses Foundation. As a heritage consultant since 2007\, he has worked on major historic sites including St Paul’s Cathedral\, Ickworth Park\, Suffolk\, and Hardwick Hall\, Derbyshire.\n \nTickets: $15 members*; $25 non-members\n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | George Frideric Handel at Home
DESCRIPTION:In 1723\, the composer George Frideric Handel moved into a new built house on Brook Street in Mayfair\, London. He would live there for 36 years\, dying in his own bed at the age of 74. From 1723\, all of his music\, beginning with the opera Giulio Cesare and including Messiah and all his great oratorios\, was composed in this house. Handel rehearsed his singers in his upstairs music room\, attracting friends and neighbors who listened. The maestro even sold his music from his front parlor. Besides being a nexus for his compositions\, Handel also hosted dinners at Brook Street and musicales—reciprocating evenings in the homes of his friends—and displayed his art collection in his home. Professor Emeritus (MIT) Ellen Harris will trace George Frideric Handel’s footsteps and activities during his life on Brook Street in London. \nEllen T. Harris is Class of 1949 Professor Emeritus at MIT and Visiting Professor at The Juilliard School. Her work includes the award-winning books George Frideric Handel: A Life with Friends (Norton\, 2014) and Handel as Orpheus: Voice and Desire in the Chamber Cantatas (Harvard\, 2001). Her research on Handel’s finances won the Westrup Prize in 2004. She has performed with John Williams and the Boston Pops and sung the National Anthem at Fenway Park. She is currently preparing a book on performing Handel’s operas.\n \nTickets: $20 members*; $30 non-members\n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | The Quest for Queen Mary
DESCRIPTION:Mary of Teck was Queen of the United Kingdom\, the Dominions\, and Empress of India from 1910-1936. The daughter of a German nobleman and granddaughter of George III\, she was always destined to become Queen. But what do we know about Queen Mary? First betrothed to the eldest son of the Prince of Wales\, and after his unexpected death\, married to his younger brother\, the future King-Emperor George V. While some biographies\, films\, and television portray her as a rigid and cold figure in pearls\, she was also a mother and grandmother—whose grandchildren said she loved the moments when they could be “a small family and do small things”. When the late Queen Elizabeth II invited author James Pope-Hennessy to write the official biography of her grandmother\, he set off between 1955 and 1958 to interview Queen Mary’s surviving relatives\, traveling all over Europe as well as to Sandringham and Balmoral. In this lecture\, royal historian Mr. Hugo Vickers will regale us with funny stories from Pope-Hennessy’s notes and other stories shared by members of the British Royal Family. Mr. Vickers will also discuss his own research and bring to life the Queen-Empress who was witness to two world wars\, a bystander to a scandal that rocked the monarchy\, and a monarch who experienced the changes of British society from the beginning of the 20th century until the 1950s. \n\nHugo Vickers\, is well known as a biographer\, lecturer and broadcaster\, and acknowledged expert on the Royal Family. He has covered events from royal weddings\, including the first wedding of the Prince of Wales; the funerals of Diana\, the Queen Mother\, Prince Philip\, the State Funeral and Committal of The Queen; and the Coronation of Charles III. The Financial Times recently described him as: ‘the most knowledgeable royal biographer on the planet.’ He has written many biographies of 20th-century figures\, including Cecil Beaton\, Vivien Leigh\, the Duchess of Windsor\, Princess Andrew of Greece\, and the Queen Mother. His first biography\, about Gladys Deacon\, Duchess of Marlborough (1881-1977) was based on his interviews with her before her death. In 2022\, he published a book with HRH The Duke of Kent\, entitled A Royal Life. In 2024\, Mr. Vickers published a novel Pining in Paradise and his biography of Clarissa\, Countess of Avon (widow of PM Anthony Eden). When not writing\, he travels through the Commonwealth and Overseas Territories\, establishing Commonwealth Walkways. Mr. Vickers is a Deputy Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire and Captain of the Lay Stewards of St George’s Chapel\, Windsor Castle. \nTickets: $20 members*; $30 non-members\n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Treason & Tragedy: Death on Tower Hill
DESCRIPTION:Paul Delaroche\, The Execution of Lady Jane Grey\, 1834. The National Gallery\, London. The 9-day Queen was executed inside the Tower on Tower Green. \nWhile the Tower of London may be infamous for its executions\, the majority of beheadings actually took place just beyond its walls\, on Tower Hill—a site steeped in political turmoil\, betrayal\, and bloody justice. In this gripping tour\, Rob Smith will unravel the dramatic stories of those who met their fate on this notorious execution ground. Tower Hill became the final stage for some of the most high-profile figures in British history\, many of whom had once wielded great power\, who found themselves condemned as traitors. We will explore the fate of Simon of Sudbury\, the Archbishop of Canterbury\, who was dragged from the Tower and beheaded by enraged Poll Tax rebels in 1381. Another infamous figure to fall on Tower Hill was Thomas Cromwell\, Henry VIII’s once-trusted advisor and architect of the English Reformation. The site also witnessed the beheading of Lord Lovat (Simon Fraser) in 1747—the last man to be publicly executed on Tower Hill. His execution\, witnessed by a large crowd\, marked the end of an era. This virtual tour will bring to life the gripping stories of those who faced the executioner’s axe—tales of ambition\, treachery\, courage\, and vengeance—while also exploring the historical significance of Tower Hill. Hear about the shadowy events that shaped British history. \nTickets: $30 members*; $40 non-members\n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | The Eagle and the Hart with Helen Castor
DESCRIPTION:The Eagle and the Hart: The Tragedy of Kings Richard II and Henry IV\nRichard of Bordeaux and Henry of Bolingbroke\, cousins born just three months apart\, were ten years old when Richard became king of England. They were 32 yrs old when Henry deposed Richard and declared himself King of England. While Richard had birthright on his side\, he was a narcissist who lacked any qualities of leadership and declared he could make up his own laws. He recruited a private army loyal to himself rather than the realm and tried to destroy those who had any resistance to his will. Unlike the King\, Henry was a leader\, a soldier and a chivalric hero who was responsible and principled. After King Richard banished his cousin and seized his inheritance\, Henry deposed Richard as a tyrant and declared himself the lawful ruler. While welcomed as a champion of the people\, soon King Henry was facing rebellion and was trapped by political uncertainty. Acclaimed historian and author Helen Castor brings to life the captivating story behind one of the strangest and most fateful events in English history (and the inspiration behind one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated plays). Dr. Castor will describe these explosive events and explain what happened when Richard demanded loyalty to himself as an individual\, rather than duty to the established constitution\, and how he tried to reshape reality rather than concede to the truth. She will tell a story about how a nation was brought to the brink of catastrophe and disintegration—and\, in the end\, how it was brought back. \n\nHelen Castor. © Chris Gibbions \n\nDr. Helen Castor is an acclaimed medieval and Tudor historian. Her first book\, Blood and Roses: The Paston Family in the Wars of the Roses\, was longlisted for what is now known as the Baillie Gifford Prize for Nonfiction and won the English Association’s Beatrice White Prize. Her next two books\, She-Wolves: The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth and Joan of Arc: A History were both on numerous Best Books of the Year lists and made into documentaries for BBC television\, and Joan of Arc was longlisted for the PEN America/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography. Her latest book The Eagle and the Hart was published in October 2024. \n\n\nZoom Rental Recording: Recording details will be emailed on January 30 and available to watch thru February 24. \nTickets: $20 members*; $30 non-members\n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Millionaire Houses Along the Strand with Dr. Paula Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Millionaire Houses Along the Strand \nThe Strand\, London \nThe Strand\, a major street in the City of Westminster\, London was\, from the middle ages\, the most prestigious place to live in London. Running from the Temple on the east to Charing Cross on the west (just as it does today)\, the Strand was strategically placed between two power centres: the City and Westminster. Furthermore\, from the 1530s\, leading courtiers and aristocrats acquired the magnificent medieval bishops’ inns and their spacious gardens\, adapting the houses and beautifying the gardens as showpieces\, visible to all who travelled on the Thames. Like the palaces along the Grand Canal in Venice\, these great houses were seen as powerful expressions of the city’s wealth and grandeur. While most of these houses were on the south side of the Strand\, Lord Burghley built a new house along the north side. A recently discovered plan of his house and garden is the most important source of information about the splendour and complexity of these houses and gardens\, a short period in London’s history of true rus in urbe. \n\n\nPaula Henderson\, Architectural and Garden Historian \nPaula Henderson has degrees in art history (University of Chicago\, M.A.) and Ph.D. in architectural history from the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London). She lectures widely in Britain (where she lived for 43 years) and the United States and has published over 70 articles on English Houses and their landscapes. Her first book\, The Tudor House and Garden: architecture and landscape in the 16th and 17th centuries (published by Yale University Press)\, won the Berger Prize for the outstanding contribution to the history of British art 2005. Francis Lincoln published Treehouses (co-authored with Adam Mornement)\, also in 2005. She is currently completing books on London gardens in the age of Shakespeare and on the Landscape as Art. She has taught courses for the Courtauld Institute of Art\, and more recently for the V&A museum. She has lectured for the Paul Mellon Center for British Art\, the Architectural Association\, both Oxford and Cambridge Universities\, Birkbeck college\, Christie’s Education\, The Inchbald School of Design\, the V&A museum\, the Tate Gallery\, The Garden History Society\, Sir John Soane’s Museum\, among others. She led tours for the Courtauld Institute to Florence (‘Gardens of the Medici’) Debyshire (‘Elizabethan architecture’) and the Cotswolds (‘Gardens of the Cotswolds’). She is a Fellow of Society of Antiquaries of London and now splits her time between Nantucket\, Massachusetts\, and Williamsburg\, Virginia. \nTickets: $15 members*; $25 non-members \n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | London’s Great Hotels Virtual Tour
DESCRIPTION:The George Inn is the only remaining galleried inn in London and was familiar to Charles Dickens. \nLondon’s Great Hotels\nZoom Rental\nWednesday\, November 27 | 12:00 p.m. ET \n\nBefore the 19th century\, visitors to London had limited options for accommodation\, primarily relying on gentlemen’s clubs\, lodging houses\, and coaching inns. Stephen Benton will unveil the fascinating history of London’s hotels through a digital walking tour\, made for Royal Oak. Our journey will begin with the last surviving galleried coaching inn in London\, the wonderful George Inn\, now preserved by the National Trust. We will explore how the advent of the railway revolutionized travel and accommodation\, leading to the establishment of hotels at many of London’s main stations\, including the magnificent Gothic marvel at St Pancras. By the early 20th century\, some of London’s most iconic hotels had been founded\, such as Claridge’s\, The Langham\, The Ritz\, and The Savoy\, which was substantially rebuilt in the 1930s in a flamboyant Art Deco style. Between the World Wars\, several grand aristocratic townhouses were demolished to make way for iconic hotels like The Dorchester and Grosvenor House. The 1960s introduced London’s first hotel tower\, the Hilton\, while the 1980s saw the rise of boutique hotels\, often housed in repurposed historic buildings. Today\, London boasts over 700 hotels with more than 120\,000 rooms\, ranging from the richly historic to the purely utilitarian. Join Stephen Benton for a captivating exploration of this diverse and ever-evolving landscape. \nTickets: $30 Members*; $40 Non-Members\n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Power & Glory: The English Country House Before the Great War
DESCRIPTION:Baddesley Clinton\, Warwickshire \nIn the decades before the First World War\, the owners of the nation’s stately homes reveled in a golden age of glamour where privilege and hedonism went hand-in-hand with duty and honour. At a time when Britain ruled over a quarter of the worlds’ population\, privileged few lived in ancestral stately country homes encumbered by history. However\, by the end of the 19th century\, members of the elite and landed gentry found themselves living in the company of arrivistes. Their new neighbors—from chorus girls to millionaire greengrocers to guano impresarios—were unencumbered by the weight of tradition. They used their “new money” to bring innovations to the country house\, affecting every aspect of life\, from the kitchen to the drawing room. In a fascinating prequel to his lecture and best-seller The Long Weekend\, Adrian Tinniswood OBE will speak about life in the English country house and describe how the self-made millionaires turned that traditional world upside down—bringing automobiles and labour-saving devices to mansions that had been standing virtually unchanged for generations. He will explore the impact of new technologies on both old homes and old owners. Could the romance of the past exist alongside the shock of the new? While electric light and bathrooms with hot and cold running water might have made things easier both above and below stairs\, it still could not quite banish the ghosts of the past. Professor Tinniswood will explain that the period before the horrors of the Great War was indeed a golden age for the British country house\, but not for the reasons we might expect. \nAdrian Tinniswood\, OBE \nAdrian Tinniswood OBE FSA\, studied English and Philosophy at Southampton University and was awarded an MPhil at Leicester University. He has acted as a consultant to the National Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund. He is currently Senior Research Fellow in History at the University of Buckingham and Visiting Fellow in Heritage and History at Bath Spa University. He has lectured at several Universities in both the United Kingdom and United States\, including the University of Oxford and the University of California\, Berkeley. SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Dressing for the Tudor Court: Power\, Beauty & Influence with Eleri Lynn
DESCRIPTION:Pair of Elizabethan gauntlet mittens at Dunham Massey\, NT \nThe Tudor monarchs and their courtiers are some of the best-known figures in history. Even today\, their stories continue to spark our curiosity and imagination. Their enduring popularity is partly due to the iconic portraits in which they are depicted in magnificent style: in farthingales and elaborate ruffs\, covered in furs and jewels\, and clothed in vast expanses of velvet and silk. Far from being decoration\, at that time fashion was pivotal in communicating the status and power of the wearer. Tudor dress was used as a tool in securing and holding a tenuous Tudor throne\, as well as a competitive “weapon” in the factions\, intrigues\, and love affairs of the court. In this talk\, Eleri Lynn\, will explore the changing fashions of the Tudor wardrobe and explain the elaborate process of dressing. Using rare surviving garments and textiles\, original documents\, and archaeological records\, she will explain how fashion was central to the Tudors’ mindset and their very understanding of royalty and power. \nEleri Lynn \nEleri Lynn is a fashion and textiles historian\, curator\, and author. She gained her curatorial experience within the Textiles and Fashion Department of the V&A Museum before becoming Curator of the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection at Historic Royal Palaces\, and thereafter Head of Exhibitions at National Museum Wales. She is a Trustee of the Royal School of Needlework\, based at Hampton Court Palace. Her recent TV appearances include the BBC2 ‘Art That Made Us’ series and BBC1’s\, regularly interview her ‘Elizabeth: Fashioning a Monarch’. She is the author of several monographs among which include Tudor Fashion (Yale University Press\, 2017)\, and Tudor Textiles (Yale University Press\, 2020)\, and a contributor to Floral Culture in the Tudor and Stuart Courts (Amsterdam University Press\, 2023). Eleri is the curator of several major fashion and textiles exhibitions including Diana: Her Fashion Story (Kensington Palace\, 2017)\, The Lost Dress of Elizabeth I (Hampton Court Palace\, 2019)\, and Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion (V&A touring\, 2013-14). She was part of the curatorial teams on Savage Beauty: Alexander McQueen (V&A\, 2013)\, Fashion Rules Restyled (Kensington Palace\, 2015)\, and Crown to Couture (Kensington Palace\, 2023).

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Churchill at Chartwell: Countdown to War with Katherine Carter
DESCRIPTION:During the tumultuous time leading up to WWII\, Winston Churchill was out of political office with his career apparently finished. However\, behind the scenes Churchill was preparing to meet the oncoming conflict using his home\, Chartwell\, as his base of operations. Chartwell\, with its rich history dating back to the 14th century\, served as more than just Churchill’s home—it was a sanctuary where he wrote speeches\, composed books\, and met with the best political minds of the 20th century. At his dining table\, Churchill gathered those who could assist his campaign against German rearmament and the British government’s response to the rising threat of Nazi Germany. The room in many ways was a witness to history. This eclectic gathering of advisors and informants\, ranging from household names like Albert Einstein and T. E. Lawrence\, to political leaders\, diplomats\, and spies\, played a pivotal role in shaping Churchill’s later strategy as Prime Minister\, and ultimately altering the course of history. Katherine Carter\, Curator at Chartwell\, will un \nDining Room at Chartwell \nveil the extraordinary\, yet little-known\, meetings that took place behind closed doors. Ms. Carter will bring to life the remarkable stories of those who visited and influenced Churchill during this pivotal time. Join us to uncover the hidden history of the meetings at Chartwell\, which ultimately influenced the greatest voice of resistance against tyranny. \n\nKatherine Carter is a Curator and Historian specializing in early 20th century British political history\, and manages the house and collections at Chartwell for almost a decade. As Curator\, she is responsible for the research\, conservation\, presentation and interpretation of the Churchill family’s home\, which typically welcomes more than 250\,000 visitors every year. Her exhibitions have included ‘Death of a Hero’\, ‘Into the Trenches’\, ‘Child of the Commons’ and ‘Churchill and the Crown’. Katherine advises organizations and institutions around the world on the life and legacy of Winston Churchill and appears frequently in print and broadcast media. SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Hidden Patrons: Women Architectural Patronage in Georgian Britain
DESCRIPTION:An enduring myth of Georgian architecture is that it was purely the pursuit of male architects and their wealthy male patrons. History states that it was men who owned grand estates and houses\, commissioned famous architects\, and embarked upon elaborate architectural schemes. However\, some women with sufficient wealth and autonomy were at the heart of architectural patronage of the day\, exerting far more influence than has previously been recognized. They were actively involved in architectural drawing\, design\, discourse\, and patronage\, with many laying out great sums on realising their architectural visions. In her lecture\, Dr. Amy Boyington will discuss these female patrons while re-examining well-known Georgian masterpieces alongside lesser-known architectural gems. Drawing from private estate papers and personal correspondence\, Dr. Boyington will uncover the role of women as important patrons and designers of architecture and interiors in eighteenth-century Britain and Ireland. \nPortrait of Henrietta Louisa Jeffreys \nWomen built across the architectural spectrum. Some remodeled their ancestral seats\, such as Jemima Yorke\, Marchioness Grey\, who updated Wrest Park\, her country house in Bedfordshire. Others transformed the interiors of their marital homes\, such as the fifteen-year-old Louisa Conolly at Castletown House\, Co. Kildare\, Ireland. Some spent vast fortunes on building magnificent London town houses\, such as Mary Hervey\, Baroness Hervey\, and Henrietta Fermor\, Countess of Pomfret. Many also chose tobuild or remodel villas during their widowhoods\, each desiring a fashionable\, convenient country residence close to the city\, but set within a tranquil arcadian setting. Mary Robinson\, Baroness Grantham\, and Amabel Hume-Campbell\, Lady Polwarth\, were sisters who were both widowed in their 30s – and each decided to create beautiful Neo-Classical villas on Putney Heath next door to each other. \nDr. Amy Boyington \nDr. Amy Boyington is a social and architectural historian who attained her PhD in architectural history from the University of Cambridge. Dr. Boyington has worked in a curatorial capacity at Holkham Hall\, Goodwood House\, and Woburn Abbey. She has worked as a research consultant for the National Trust at Stowe Landscape Gardens and for Historic Royal Palaces at Kensington Palace. She was recently a Senior Properties Historian for English Heritage. Her debut book is Hidden Patrons: Women and Architectural Patronage in Georgian Britain (Bloomsbury\, 2023). She is now working on her second book Decadence & Display (Yale University Press) which focuses on the eighteenth-century country house dining room. Dr. Boyington is also a popular historian on social media\, @history_with_amy\, with over 1.4 million followers. \n\nTickets: $15 members*; $25 non-members \n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Mrs. Greville at Polesden Lacey with Alice Strickland & Anna Vesaluoma
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Anderson\, The Hon. Mrs Ronald Greville DBE (1863-1942) by Emile-Auguste Carolus-Duran (Lille 1838 – Paris 1917) \nMargaret Greville (1863-1942) was a wealthy heiress and a member of the aristocracy through her marriage to the Hon. Ronald Greville\, the heir of an old political dynasty. Following her marriage\, Margaret entered the glamorous social set that surrounded the Prince of Wales\, the future King Edward VII\, who commented on her ‘positive genius for hospitality.’ Margaret’s money and position was a powerful combination in Edwardian Britain\, and while she was a successful hostess\, Margaret was also a significant collector. Polesden Lacey in Surrey now houses the extraordinary collection Margaret created for both her London townhouse and her country estate. At both residences she worked with the interior decorators Mèwes and Davis and White\, Allom & Company to create lavish interiors for the display of her collection. Margaret’s objets d’art collection included carvings by Cartier and Fabergé and provided a dazzling display for her guests and visitors. Once Margaret came into her inheritance in 1913\, she complemented her father’s collection of Dutch 17th century paintings with the addition of Italian Medieval and Renaissance religious works and European and British portraits. In 1942\, Margaret Greville bequeathed Polesden Lacey to the National Trust ‘for the largest number of people to have enjoyment thereof\,’ anticipating that her collections would be combined ‘to form a Picture and Art Gallery’. The life-size portrait of \nFront of Polesden Lacey\, Surrey \nLady Greville\, by society portraitist Emile-August Carolus-Duran (1838- 1917)\, was recently returned to Polesden Lacey in 2024 following conservation at The Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio at Knole. Dr Alice Strickland\, a curator for the NT in London and the South East\, will speak about Lady Greville and her life at Polesden Lacey while Anna Vesaluoma\, a Paintings Conservator for the NT\, will delve into the meticulous conservation of this painting and the incredible results. Now re-displayed at Poleden Lacey in its rightful place on the loggia staircase\, the portrait remains a record and symbol of Greville’s incredible legacy. \nAnna Vesalouma \nAnna Vesalouma is a Paintings Conservator for the National Trust\, based at the Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Studio on the property of Knole House\, Kent. During her time at the ROF Conservation Studio\, Anna has treated a wide range of paintings from across National Trust properties\, including works by Carolus-Duran\, John Singer Sargent\, George Romney and Melchior D’Hondecoeter. Before joining the Trust\, Anna worked two years as a painting conservation fellow at the Yale University Art Gallery\, in New Haven\, Connecticut\, where she focused on the conservation of American paintings. She holds a postgraduate degree in the Conservation of Easel Paintings from the Courtauld Institute of Art\, London\, and a BA (Hons) in Painting from the University of Edinburgh. \nDr Alice Strickland \n Dr. Alice Strickland is a curator for the National Trust in London and the South East. Her doctorate considered British women artists of the Second World War and she was awarded a Paul Mellon research grant for a publication on women artists of the First World War. Her publications include contributions to Laura Knight a Celebration (Penlee exhibition catalogue\, 2021) and Learning from the Masters (Ashgate\, 2013). SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | British Consorts: From the Complicated to the Controversial
DESCRIPTION:The relationship between a royal consort and a reigning monarch can be complicated. While consorts of British monarchs have no constitutional status or power\, many have had significant political influence and supported the sovereign in his or her duties. Historian Carol Ann Lloyd will provide an in-depth exploration of some of Britain’s most legendary royal couples\, focusing on the dramatic challenges they faced in balancing their marriages with their singular roles as rulers. In the 12th century\, the relationship between Eleanor of Aquitaine\, Queen Consort\, and King Henry II was notably turbulent. Their relationship was marked by Eleanor’s attempts to undermine Henry’s reign\, and his subsequent retaliation imprisoning his wife. During the mid-15th century\, Marguerite of Anjou’s efforts to secure the reign of Henry VI led her to become one of the most despised royal consorts in history. Some foreign-born consorts did not try to assimilate into English society after their marriage\, causing devastating political consequences. For example\, during the 17th century\, Queen Henrietta Maria’s lifestyle choices led to the trial and execution of her husband\, King Charles I. Behind the scenes\, some consorts were either forced to act as the de facto British ruler\, such as Queen Charlotte during George III’s unsteady reign\, while others were literally locked out by their King husbands\, such as Queen Caroline and George IV. In her lecture\, Ms. Lloyd will also highlight the male consorts who had to navigate the dual role of husband while they were subject to their reigning queen wives. For example\, Prince Albert could never become King consort\, as his gender would have led him to outrank his wife\, Queen Victoria. Finally\, Ms. Lloyd will discuss the influence of more modern consorts (or would have been consorts)\, including the significant impact of Wallis Simpson on King Edward VIII’s reign\, as well as the complex situation that Prince Philip created for Queen Elizabeth II. \nCarol Ann Lloyd\, Historian and Lecturer \nCarol Ann Lloyd is a popular speaker who shares the stories of Shakespeare and English history. She is the former Manager of Visitor Education at Folger Shakespeare Library\, where she gave workshops and tours about Shakespeare and Early Modern England. Carol Ann has presented programs at the Smithsonian\, Folger Shakespeare Library\, Agecroft Hall\, and TEDx\, among other venues. Ms. Lloyd is a member of the National Speakers Association. \n\nTickets: $20 members*; $30 non-members \n*Membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | The Irish Country House with Robert O'Byrne
DESCRIPTION:Irish country houses have a distinct character and personality\, often whimsical and quirky and not following the stereotypical English country house style. In his lecture based on his new book\, The Irish Country House: A New Vision\, historian and author Robert O’Byrne highlights the eclecticism of Ireland’s historic interiors. He will showcase a mix of historical Irish estates as well as contemporary restorations to offer a fresh perspective on the beauty of these homes. He will explore some of Ireland’s most interesting and unusual interiors\, from derelict estates to historic hunting lodges\, and from an Irish castle renovated by a Mexican financier to an \nElizabethan Revival house transformed by a contemporary artist. He will illustrate a mansion in Westmeath\, restored by the descendants of its original owners\, and show Coollattin\, Ireland’s largest country house at 65\,000 square feet\, where the Baroque style is emphasized by its unfinished state. By delving into these remarkable interiors\, O’Byrne offers a new understanding of the cultural and historical significance embedded within Ireland’s country houses. \nRobert O’Byrne\, Noted Author \nRobert O’Byrne is a writer and lecturer specialising in the fine and decorative arts. He is the author of more than a dozen books\, among them Luggala Days: The Story of a Guinness House (Cico Books); Romantic Irish Homes\, Romantic English Homes: A Tribute to Desmond FitzGerald\, 29th Knight of Glin (Lilliput Press)\, and The Irish Aesthete: Ruins of Ireland (2019). SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Pamela Harriman: A Life of Power\, Seduction\, and Intrigue with Sonia Purnell
DESCRIPTION:Often written off as a mere courtesan and social climber\, Pamela Harriman’s true historic legacy has been overshadowed by her glamorous social life and infamous erotic adventures. Much of what she did behind the scenes – on both sides of the Atlantic – remained invisible and secret. During WWII\, Churchill’s beloved daughter-in-law became his “secret weapon\,” strategically wining\, dining\, and seducing diplomats and generals to help win over Americans to the British cause against Hitler. After the war\, she helped to transform Fiat heir\, Gianni Agnelli\, into Italy’s ‘uncrowned king’ on the international stage. After helping the Democratic party and an unknown Bill Clinton take the American presidency\, she was appointed U.S. Ambassador to France. In this role she deployed her legendary powers to charm world leaders\, while working on N.A.T.O. expansion and aiding efforts to bring peace to Bosnia—playing a huge role during the high-water mark of American global supremacy. For five decades Harriman blazed a trail through to the center of political power. There is practically no one in 20th-century politics\, culture\, and fashion whose lives she did not touch\, including the Kennedys\, Truman Capote\, Aly Khan\, Kay Graham\, Ed Murrow\, and Frank Sinatra. Harriman acknowledged her notoriety and admitted “I’d rather have had bad things written about me than be forgotten.” In this lecture\, investigative journalist and award-winning biographer Sonia Purnell presents an electrifying re-examination of Harriman’s story using new research and previously unknown sources. Telling a tale full of sex and politics; set on yachts and in palaces; and always hallmarked by glamour and luxury\, Purnell will unveil for the first time how Harriman left an indelible mark in the heart of world history and politics. \n \nSonia Purnell is a bestselling author and journalist known for her lively writing and meticulous research\, with a global readership. Her work has been optioned by leading filmmakers and praised by diverse audiences. Her first book\, “Just Boris: A Tale of Blond Ambition\,” a biography of Boris Johnson\, was longlisted for the Orwell Prize in 2011 and remains the definitive biography. Her second book\, “First Lady” (UK) / “Clementine” (US)\, unveiled the crucial role of Winston Churchill’s wife\, Clementine\, influencing her portrayal in media such as Netflix’s “The Crown.” “A Woman of No Importance\,” Purnell’s third book\, tells the true story of WWII spy Virginia Hall and became a New York Times Bestseller\, winning the Plutarch Prize for Best Biography in 2020. Her latest book\, “Kingmaker: Pamela Harriman’s Astonishing Life of Power\, Seduction & Intrigue\,” to be published in September 2024\, reexamines the life of Pamela Harriman\, revealing her influence on 20th-century politics. Purnell’s work has received acclaim from numerous publications\, including the Independent\, Guardian\, Daily Telegraph\, and New York Times. Her books have been translated into over twenty languages\, inspiring readers worldwide. \nTickets: $20 members and co-sponsors*; $30 non-members \n*Use co-sponsor code at checkout\, membership discount applied automatically when logged into your Royal-Oak.org account

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Designs for Living: Noël Coward at Home with Patrick Monahan
DESCRIPTION:Designs for Living: Noël Coward at Home \nNoël Coward (1899-1973) was famously called “The Master” by Lord Louis Mountbatten for his talents as an actor\, writer\, composer\, singer\, director\, producer\, and painter. However\, Coward was also an exceptional house designer who created elegant environments for himself and in which to entertain his celebrity friends: from the English countryside to the Swiss Alps\, and the hills of Jamaica. As a rising playwright of Drawing Room Comedies in the 1930s\, he engaged society decorator Syrie Maugham—famous for her all-white rooms—to design airy\, art-filled spaces which were fitting for his theatrical family\, such as Gertrude Lawrence and Ivor Novello. Coward’s 1932 comedy play Design for Living\, starring himself\, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne\, faithfully captures this elegant avant-garde look in its stage surroundings. At the same time\, Coward owned a half-timbered Tudor manor house in Kent\, called Goldenhurst Farm\, where he entertained guests with legendary weekend parties far from the prying eye of the London press. Coward emerged from World War II as well known English institution and carried his brand as a British bon viveur around the world. In London\, he stayed in a suite at the Savoy Hotel\, directing Elaine Stritch in his musical comedy Sail Away\, playing in the downstairs theater. \nIn 1956\, he moved his residency from England and built in Switzerland\, a chalet\, named Chalet Coward\, at Les Avants\, near Montreux. There he hosted the cream of Hollywood\, Broadway\, and the West End who regularly visited—including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton\, Audrey Hepburn\, Sophia Loren\, and Peter O’Toole. Finally\, Coward built his favorite and last home—two villas in Jamaica: a large guest house\, called Blue Harbor where he entertained friends like the Queen Mother\, as well as a small cottage\, called Firefly\, just for himself. On the 125th anniversary of Noël Coward’s birth\, join Country Life and Vanity Fair contributor Patrick Monahan as he explores and illustrated Coward’s life at home. He will explain how the places in which Coward chose to live influenced his most beloved plays and songs. He will illustrate some of Coward’s many houses and tell stories from Coward’s life\, many he heard directly from Coward’s friends\, like Elaine Stritch. \nPatrick Monahan\, is a writer and independent art advisor\, specializing in British paintings\, drawings\, and sculpture from the 18th century to the present. A native New Yorker\, he is consulted by collectors and museums on both sides of the Atlantic\, including the Museo de Arte de Ponce\, Puerto Rico. His written work appears in Country Life and Vanity Fair\, as well as in the exhibition catalogue “Flaming June: the making of an icon\,” Leighton House\, London\, 2016. He holds an MPhil from the University of Cambridge as well as a BA from the University of Chicago\, both in art history. He lives and works in New York City\, with regular visits to London.

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | ‘Outsiders’ and the English Country House with Adrian Tinniswood
DESCRIPTION:Rock garden with rhododendrons at Cragside\, Northumberland \n‘Outsiders’ and the English Country House \nAt the beginning of the 20th century\, the owners of Britain’s stately homes reveled in the halcyon days of glory and glamour. Nothing lay beyond their reach in a world where privilege and hedonism went hand in hand with duty and honour. The ancestral seats of ancient nobility stood cheek by jowl next to the palaces of Jewish bankers (Waddesdon Manor) and Indian princes (Elveden). Before World War I\, Britain was a place where dukes and duchesses mixed with chorus-line dancers who had turned into aristocratic society hostesses. It was a world where self-made millionaires who had been raised in the slums of Manchester and Birmingham\, or whose family were farmers\, owned glorious country houses (Craagside). It was a world where Americans who restored and transformed English country houses (Hever Castle) were received in the highest social circles in Britain. Historian Adrian Tinniswood\, OBE\, will explore the English country house during this brief golden age\, when stately homes in Britain were at their most opulent. He will illustrate and explain how for the privileged few—not born into nobility or an aristocratic lineage—life in the country house during this period was the best life of all. \nAdrian Tinniswood OBE\, studied English and Philosophy at Southampton University and was awarded an MPhil at Leicester University. He has acted as a consultant to the National Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund. He is currently Senior Research Fellow in History at the University of Buckingham and Visiting Fellow in Heritage and History at Bath Spa University. He has lectured at several Universities both in the US and UK\, including the University of Oxford and the University of California\, Berkeley. He is the author of 16 books on architectural and social history including His Invention So Fertile: A Life of Christopher Wren; By Permission of Heaven: The True Story of the Great Fire of London; The Long Weekend: Life in the English Country House Between the Wars; Behind the Throne: A Domestic History of the Royal Household and Noble Ambition: The Rise and Fall of the English Country House. Tinniswood was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to heritage.

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | In the Footsteps of Jane Austen: A Writer's Love of Bath with Devoney Looser
DESCRIPTION:Lyme Park \nIn the Footsteps of Jane Austen: A Writer’s Love of Bath \nBath\, England\, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was a fraught\, fascinating place\, not only because of the supposed healing powers of its waters\, but because of its notoriety as a marriage market. The popular spa town was imagined as a magical destination. Day-to-day life there\, however\, could fall short of the ideal\, as Jane Austen’s fiction so vividly describes. Emma’s jilted Mr. Elton finds himself an equally odious wife there\, with shocking speed. Persuasion’s heroine Anne Elliot\, we’re told\, “disliked Bath.” Her sour older sister mistakenly predicts that “nobody will want” Anne in Bath\, but there Anne eventually does find herself in love and beloved (again). \n\nIn Northanger Abbey\, heroine Catherine Morland and her circle hope Bath will supply the “adventures” she lacks in her home village. Catherine isn’t disappointed\, although her early experiences involve days of “looking at everybody and speaking to no one\,” and many of the friends she makes prove false ones. Thanks to these enduring stories\, scenes\, and characters\, today’s Bath has become a destination city for “Janeites”\, who retrace the Austen’s steps in Assembly Rooms\, concert halls\, and the famous Pump Room. \nSewing table in Boudoir at Saltram ©National Trust Images Andreas von Einsiedel \n\nBut what was Bath really like for a young\, unmarried woman in this era\, whether in search of adventure\, authorship\, marriage\, love\, or all four? Few letters survive from Jane Austen during the time she lived in Bath from 1801-05. Scholars also debate whether she was happy or miserable. \n\nIn her lecture\, Devoney Looser will revisit the question of Austen’s happiness in Bath focusing on the years leading up to the Regency period. She will show Bath’s many attractions and obstacles\, as seen not only through the famous novelist’s eyes\, but in the accounts of other writers who visited during this transformational era. \nDevoney Looser\, Regents Professor of English at Arizona State University\, is the author or editor of 11 books\, most recently the biography Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters\, Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës (Bloomsbury US\, 2022). She is also the author of The Making of Jane Austen (2017) and the editor of The Daily Jane Austen: A Year of Quotes (2019). Looser\, a Guggenheim Fellow and an NEH Public Scholar\, has published essays in The Atlantic\, New York Times\, Salon\, Slate\, TLS\, and The Washington Post. Her series of 24\, 30-minute lectures on Austen is available through The Great Courses and Audible. Her next book\, Wild for Austen\, will be published by St. Martin’s Press in 2025. In addition to being a quirky book nerd\, she plays roller derby under the name ‘Stone Cold Jane Austen’.

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Wilton House: An English Treasure House with Jeremy Musson
DESCRIPTION:Wilton House: An English Treasure House  \nWilton House\, near Salisbury in Wiltshire\, has been the seat of the Earls of Pembroke for over 400 years – it is now home to the 18th Earl and Countess of Pembroke. Like many great English country houses\, Wilton was built on the site of a medieval abbey\, in this case given by King Henry VIII in 1544 courtier Sir William Pembroke\, later 1st Earl Pembroke (1501-1570). Wilton has been shaped by some of the most significant names in architecture and interior design. Some of the 16th-century house survives\, but the most notable part of the house today is that remodelled in the 1640s for Philip Herbert\, the 4th Earl of Pembroke (1584-1650)\, by Inigo Jones (1573-1652) and Salomon de Caus. It represents a significant moment in the transition to classically inspired architecture in Britain. Further alterations in the early 1800s included a magnificent cloister by James Wyatt (1746-1813) for the 11th Earl of Pembroke (1759-1852) designed to display a collection of classical sculpture. \n\nThe Single and Double Cube state rooms designed by Inigo Jones and John Webb are considered some of the finest of English interiors\, and the house contains the outstanding collections of classical sculpture and Old Master paintings. Architectural historian Jeremy Musson will illustrate the rich interiors and artistic masterpieces and show what they reveal about changing values and attitudes to art\, architecture\, and decoration\, as well as the story of the Earls of Pembroke. \nJeremy Musson is a leading commentator and authority on the English country house. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and sits on a number of boards and trusts including the Country House Foundation. He was awarded an MPhil in Renaissance History at the Warburg Institute\, University of London\, in 1989 and was Architectural Editor of Country Life from 1995-2007. Before joining Country Life in 1995\, Mr. Musson was an assistant regional curator for the National Trust in East Anglia. He has written and edited hundreds of articles on historic country houses. Mr. Musson also presented 14 programmes on BBC 2\, making up two series called The Curious House Guest in 2005-07\, and he also lectures and supervises for academic programmes with Cambridge University\, London University\, Buckingham University\, and the Attingham Summer School. Among his books include Up and Down Stairs: The History of the English Country House Servant (2009)\, English Country House Interiors (2011)\, Robert Adam: Country House Design\, Decoration & the Art of Elegance (2017)\, The Country House: Past\, Present\, Future: Great Houses of the British Isles (2018)\, and Romantics and Classics: Style in the English Country House (Rizzoli\, 2021).

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Cotswold Manors and Gardens with Paula Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Cotswold Manors and Gardens \nThe Cotswold hills with their mellow stone cottages\, elegant manor houses and imposing castles contain some of the most important historic gardens in England. A virtual history of English gardens can be found in Gloucestershire\, parts of Oxfordshire\, and Warwickshire. Although little survives of the Roman and medieval periods\, some very early gardens remain: Thornbury Castle and Horton Court are two remarkable early 16th century gardens. From the 17th century\, the restored gardens at Westbury Court are well known\, while ghosts of the late 17th-century gardens at Dyrham Park are more challenging to discover. \nThe 18th century is represented in the poetic garden at Rousham\, William Kent’s best surviving landscape\, as well as in Capability Brown’s most famous garden at Blenheim Palace. Quirkier examples of the English landscape are found at Painswick and Sezincote. \nModern gardens\, too\, are impressive: the Arts and Crafts garden at Snowshill and especially Major Lawrence Johnston’s Hidcote Manor\, which became a model for so many later garden designs. This lecture covers the history of the English garden\, using both famous and little-known gardens\, all set in the most unspoiled part of England. \nPaula Henderson\n\nPaula Henderson has degrees in art history (University of Chicago\, M.A.) and Ph.D. in architectural history from the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London). She lectures widely in Britain (where she lived for 43 years) and the United States and has published over seventy articles on English Houses and their settings. Her first book\, The Tudor House and Garden: Architecture and Landscape in the 16th and 17th Centuries (published by Yale University Press)\, won the Berger Prize for the outstanding contribution to the history of British art 2005. Treehouses (co-authored with Adam Mornement) was published by Francis Lincoln\, also in 2005. She is currently completing books on London gardens in the age of Shakespeare and on the Landscape as Art. \nShe taught courses for the Courtauld Institute of Art Institute for many years and\, most recently for the V&A museum. She has lectures for the Paul Mellon Center for British Art\, the Architectural Association\, both Oxford and Cambridge Universities\, Birkbeck college\, Christie’s Education\, The Inchbald School of Design\, the V&A museum\, the Tate Gallery\, The Garden History Society\, Sir John Soane’s Museum\, Sotheby’s Educational Studies and many others. She led tours for the Courtauld Institute to Florence (‘Gardens of the Medici’) Debyshire (‘Elizabethan architecture’) and the Cotswolds (‘Gardens of the Cotswolds’). While living in England\, she also traveled to the United States to lecture for the Society of Architectural Historians\, The Garden Club of America\, The royal Oak Foundation\, and the Williamsburg Institute. She is a Fellow of Society of Antiquaries of London and now splits her time between Nantucket\, MA and Williamsburg\, VA.

SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | A Collector’s Country House: William Randolph Hearst with Victoria Kastner
DESCRIPTION:A Collector’s Country House: William Randolph Hearst \nWhen Winston Churchill visited William Randolph Hearst’s estate at San Simeon during Churchill’s 1929 California tour\, he was pleasantly surprised. Though he had been expecting “a Monte Carlo casino perched atop the Rock of Gibraltar\,” he found instead a stunning country house and an intriguing host. Hearst was an art collector in the 18th-century English tradition. Like William Beckford and Horace Walpole\, Hearst personally selected every object in his vast collection\, and determined its location. For 28 years\, Julia Morgan—the first female architect to gain worldwide prominence—worked right beside him creating La Cuesta Encantada (The Enchanted Hill)\, as it was formally known. \nAt San Simeon\, Hearst blended English country house traditions with Californian informalities. Charlie Chaplin\, Cary Grant\, and all the Hollywood set rubbed elbows with Calvin Coolidge and Bernard Shaw. Presiding as hostess was Hearst’s companion\, the actress Marion Davies. The end result was a quintessentially American country house with English style gardens: built by a media mogul\, designed by a woman architect\, presided over by a Hollywood starlet\, and forever immortalized by a film—Orson Welles’s brooding Citizen Kane. SUMMARY:Zoom Rental | Once a King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII with Jane Marguerite Tippett
DESCRIPTION:Once a King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII\n\nMany people are familiar with the history of the Duke of Windsor\, the former King Edward VIII who gave up the British throne to marry the twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson. Although an-often-repeated story\, historian and author Jane Marguerite Tippett brings new insight through her astonishing discovery of the first and unedited drafts of Edward’s memoir A King’s Story\, written with the assistance of Life magazine journalist Charles J.V. Murphy. Preserved in Murphy’s archive\, but overlooked by previous Royal scholars\, Tippett uncovered the private manuscript that Edward created between 1947 and 1951. \nShe also discovered hundreds of pages of interviews Murphy conducted with the couple in 1954 when he was working on the Duchess’s biography. In her lecture\, Tippett will explore the significance of this material\, and how through Edward’s writing we gain an entirely new understanding of his life as Prince of Wales as well as the momentous events of his brief 11-month reign. Tippett will scrutinize the ways in which Edward’s writings shift our understanding of his importance in the history of the 20th-century British monarchy and explore how this material may change people’s perspective on the significance of his royal career. \nJane Marguerite Tippett\n\nJane Tippett is a historian and archivist. She graduated from University of Delaware with a BA in French\, History and English Literature. She received her MSt. in History of Art from Wadham College\, Oxford\, where she wrote her dissertation on the centrality of provenance in the contemporary fine art auction market. Since graduating she has worked as a private archivist to high-net-worth families and interior design firms in New York City\, Boston\, and London. Once A King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII (Hodder & Stoughton\, October 2023) is her first book. Her next book\, Monsieur\, which will be published in May 2024\, is a survey of the photographic work of Patrick O’Higgins\, the biographer and longtime companion of Helena Rubinstein. \nRent the recording and watch at your leisure!
