The Newberry Library Reborn

And Chippendale’s Legacy

Join Royal Oak for a special behind the scenes tour of the newly renovated Newberry Library. We will get to view the redesigned spaces, including the Welcome Center, meeting rooms, and exhibition galleries. Then we will head to rare books room to learn about the library’s extensive collection of manuscripts and artworks and have an opportunity for hands-on experience with some rare books. Joining us for the tour will be Leslie Fitzpatrick, Associate Curator of European Decorative Arts, Art Institute of Chicago and Royal Oak Scholar, Attingham Summer School of 2017, who, in honor of his 300th anniversary, will explain the importance of Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, published in 1754 and his lasting legacy. Leslie will also reveal the histories of other highlights in the rare book room. Refreshments will follow the tour, graciously donated by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Spain.
