Midtown Marvels: An Art Deco Tour

In-Person Walking Tour

Journey through the heart of Midtown and Murray Hill on this Art Deco tour that will take us back to the splendid era of the late 1920s and 1930s! Architectural historian Matt Postal will help us trace the footprint left by jazz age residential buildings, hotels, and skyscrapers that defined this iconic period. We will marvel at the applied ornament as we explore a curated selection of both renowned and lesser-known gems crafted by visionary architects such as Kenneth Franzheim, Victor Hafner, and Raymond Hood, among others.

Highlights include the enchanting 24-floor Towne House Apartments in Murray Hill and 275 Madison Avenue, a 43-story office building known as the American Home Products Building. Another stop is the Fred French Building, a 1927 skyscraper on the corner of 45th Street that was one of the most desired addresses on the avenue. We will look at the 10-story Goelet Building designed in the Art Deco style but modified to emphasize the horizontality of the lower stories’ extensive windows. Finally we will see the ornate Chanin and Chrysler Buildings.
