In-Person Walking Tour
Join Royal Oak for this in-person walking tour of some of Manhattan’s most beautiful and historic places of worship, as we explore the evolution of ecclesiastical design in Greenwich Village.
Led by architectural historian Matt Postal, this tour will take us on a journey through time, showcasing influential Victorian-era designs by major figures such as Richard Upjohn, James Renwick Jr., and McKim Mead & White. Our tour will begin at St. Mark’s-in-the-Bowery, the second oldest church in the borough, and a true gem of Victorian architecture. From there, we will explore the neighborhood, with stops at the First Presbyterian Church, Washington Square Methodist Church, and Judson Memorial Church.
Along the way, we will discuss the history and significance of each building and examine the unique features that make them stand out from one another. We will also take a closer look at the skillful additions and alterations that are frequently overlooked, including noteworthy chapels, rectories, and school structures. Join us as we explore the beauty of Manhattan’s places of worship and discover the rich history and culture of this vibrant neighborhood.
