Codman Estate Tour
Online House Tour
The Codman Estate in Lincoln MA, is an outstanding example of a country estate laid out in the English manner. The house, built c. 1740, overlooks elaborate grounds and gardens and was the county seat of five generations of the Codman family.
Wendy Hubbard, Historic New England Site Manager, will show us the rich interiors of the house handsomely furnished with European and American art and memorabilia. She will explain how each generation left their unique mark on the home, creating an exceptional blend of decorative styles that reflect the family’s distinguished past.
The noted interior designer Ogden Codman, Jr., best known for his Beaux-Arts style and co-author with Edith Wharton of The Decoration of Houses, created the house’s magnificent design scheme for parents. Outside, we’ll discover the turn-of-the century hidden Italianate Garden. This beautiful garden features perennial beds, statuary, and a reflecting pool filled with water lilies.
Wendy will also illustrate the English cottage garden, which was established in the 1930s and is a charming example of classic English garden style with perennial beds. Please join us as we explore the rich history and stories behind this gentleman’s country seat, and gain insight into the lives of the Codman family.
